Highlights

  • The LG V30 will be the third iteration under the V series, however, would not be as bulky
  • The Galaxy Note 8 from Samsung would have an Infinity Display which would be a 6.3-inch unit
  • The recently launched Nokia 8 is a serious competitor to the two aforementioned phones

It has been the month of flagship phone launches, well, mostly! HMD Global, Nokia’s parent company has just pulled the wraps off its flagship phone, the Nokia 8. It is offered with some pretty impressive performance bits along with some exclusive features like Dual Sight. However, the South Koreans, LG and Samsung, are also gearing up to introduce their flagship phones, the V30 and the Galaxy Note 8, to take on the Finnish giant. So, while the Nokia 8 may have its exclusive set of gizmos, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, as well as the LG V30, have quite a few tricks up their sleeve as well. Here is what you can expect from the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the LG V30 that are to be launched within this month.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the LG V30 are being introduced by the end of this month. The Galaxy Note 8 is already confirmed for August 23 and most likely it will sport Samsung’s Exynos 8895 chipset or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor. This processor is expected to be paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. Considering these specifications, the LG V30 and the Nokia 8 have a serious competitor.

The LG V30 is also no slouch either! It is expected to have a similar Snapdragon 835 processor mated to 6GB RAM. There may be a 64GB and 128GB internal storage options which can be further expanded by 256GB using a microSD card.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be offered with a 3,300mAh battery which may seem to be rather petite for a fairly large phone. The processor, however, is expected to optimise the battery for maximum backup which may take you through the entire day on the regular use. We will be testing the battery backup once we have a unit for review.

The LG V30 may have a 3,200mAh unit that is expected to be just as sufficient for the 6-inch OLED display and the Snapdragon processor with 6GB RAM should make it pretty efficient. The battery may not be the best-in-segment, in terms of capacity. However, it should suffice through one day of use considering that phones now optimise battery consumption based on usage.

Display

Undoubtedly, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 would have a fairly large 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display. Since the device will be relatively taller than its rivals, the aspect ratio would also be 18:5.9 which is ideal for watching movies as well as playing games. Samsung also confirmed that the Note 8 would have the ‘Infinity Display’. This means bezels on each end of the screen would be minimal offering an immersive user experience.

The LG V30 comes quite close with a 6.0-inch screen which will be an OLED unit with 18:9 aspect ratio. Like the Note 8, bezels on the V30 would also be minimal offering a brilliant user interface. The LG V30 will be a Daydream compatible device, which means Virtual Reality experience would be better compared to other phones.

Camera

The one aspect where smart phones are evolving rapidly is cameras. Both, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and LG V30 have dual setup for the primary camera. While Samsung has two 12MP units with 2X optical zoom, the LG V30 has a slight upper hand with 16MP and 13MP cameras that have f/1.6 aperture, a first for any smartphone ever. According to LG, the camera is capable of shooting 25 percent brighter photos, even in low light, compared to the V30’s predecessors.

While Samsung will officially introduce the Note 8 on 23rd of August, the LG V30 would be launched on 31st of this month. Both phones have an impressive capability on paper which suggests that one should ideally wait for them instead of impulsively buying other flagship phones.
