Chinese phone manufacturer, Xiaomi has been in the news recently for negative publicity, particularly due to a Note 4 exploding in a man’s pocket. The incident took place when Bhavana Suryakiran, a resident of East Godavari in Andhra Pradesh was riding his motorcycle when his 20-day old Redmi Note 4 exploded in his pocket.
He immediately pulled over and threw the handset, however, sustained minor injuries. After the incident came to light, Xiaomi launched an investigation and according to preliminary findings, this particular phone was subjected to extreme external force.
“We would like to clarify a recent incident of a damaged Redmi Note 4 in East Godavari Andhra Pradesh. We were able to procure the device after multiple conversations with the customer. Upon first impressions of the damaged device, we can conclude that extreme external force was applied to the device, which leads to the back cover and the battery being bent and the screen getting damaged,” the company told IANS.
If one is to take into account the factor of where the injury to place, it is clear that Bhavana, the victim was carrying his phone in the trouser pocket. While riding a two-wheeler this area of a trouser is stretched due to its structural limitation. This would have led to excessive pressure on the phone leading to damage and explosion. It is ideal to keep any smartphone in a bag or in the upper pocket while riding a two-wheeler as there are chances it would get unnecessarily strained in trouser pockets.
