Ever since Samsung showcased a flexible display prototype back in 2013, known as Youm, the rumours of a foldable flagship from the company have been doing the rounds. Several speculations have also surfaced the internet suggesting that the South Korean giant might come up with a foldable smartphone monikered as Galaxy X. The device is reportedly being inspected by the Korean National Research Agency (NRRA) and is expected to hit the markets next year.
The smartphone with model number SM-G888N0 had earlier received its certification from both Bluetooth SIG and Wi-Fi Alliance. Notably, Samsung has yet not made any announcement regarding the same. South Korea is speculated to be the first market to receive the device.
The Samsung introduced to the world what it described as the “world’s first foldable AMOLED” display at the CES 2009. Though the NRRA listing does not reveal any specifications and launch date of the device, the Korean Herald once quoted DJ Koh as saying, “We have a plan to adopt a foldable display in our roadmap. We are currently addressing some technological hurdles to commercialize such a device. We will launch a foldable device when we are fully ready, and we are aiming to do so next year.”
In terms of specifications, the Galaxy X is expected to come with Bluetooth 5.0 and run on Android Nougat out of the box. The foldable smartphone is expected to come in two variants: Galaxy X and Galaxy X1.
There were reports that surfaced in July suggesting that Samsung Galaxy X had received Bluetooth and Wi-Fi functionality certification. The company had reportedly also got the trademark certification for the Galaxy X in South Korea in the month of March this year.
All of it remains the speculations as no official statement has been made by the South Korean giant, but we do look forward to seeing the launch of a foldable smartphone next year.
